Joseph Priestly House

The Joseph Priestly House is located in Northumberland, Pennsylvania along the north branch of the Susquehanna River. Priestly, most remembered today for his discovery of oxygen in 1774, was also a noted theologian and political progressive in his native England. His views made him a controversial figure and he eventually fled with his family to the United States in 1794 to escape religious persecution and political strife. The house was designed by Priestly's wife Mary and includes a laboratory where Joseph continued his work in the late years of his life. Today, the site is a National Historic Landmark and has been a frequent place of celebration for the American Chemical Society.
